BROWNVILLE - Charles Ernest Gray (Charlie to most and Bampi to his grandchildren) passed away July 23, 2021, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine. Charlie was born on March 18, 1948 in Tewksbury, Massachusetts to Reba Pearl Gray and Victor Henry Gray.
Charlie moved to Brownville Junction, Maine, in 1981 and resided there at the time of his death. Charlie was a well-known man and very respected. He spent his last five years driving taxi (Junction Cab) for Dean Bellatty. In his travels he made many new friends including residents from surrounding towns and of course the "railroad crew." Before driving taxi, Charlie drove bus for First Student Bus Service out of Alton, Maine, where his coworkers very much enjoyed his presence. Prior to his job as a bus driver, he was employed at Great Northern Paper Company in Millinocket for 30 plus years, where he worked his way up to supervisor from many years of experience. Charlie took on a passion for collecting stamps and coins when he was younger. This hobby stuck with him as he grew older. Another one of Charlie's hobbies was talking about politics! His family and friends knew to avoid the topic or a conversation could go on for hours. He also loved going for "moose rides" on the Millinocket road in his free time. He loved making everyone laugh, especially his grandchildren. He created bonds with everyone that were unbreakable. Charlie's friends and family would describe him as friendly, kind, honest, hardworking, funny, caring, intelligent and so much more.
Charlie is survived by his sister, Alice DiPaolo, Priscilla Girard, who passed shortly after him on September 13, 2021; his children, Andrea Gray, Tracy Gray, Charles Gray Jr. and Kimberly Johnson (Gray); his son-in-laws, Joshua Anderson, JR Dugan and Fitzroy Johnson; his daughter-in-law, Tracy Gray (Karpowicz); and his ex-wife, Barbara Patchell. Charlie is also survived by his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Jazmyn Gray, Abbygail Anderson, Kassidy Rudge (Dugan) and husband, Seth Rudge, Dakota Dugan, Joshua Gray, Alyssa Gray, Jordan Freeman, and Jayden Johnson; his great-granddaughter, Hazel Gray; great-grandson, Samuel Gray; and many nieces and nephews. Charlie was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Stanley, Doris Fontes and Grace Oliver; his brothers, Jim, Raymond and Robert Gray; his mother, Reba Gray; father, Victor Gray; and his granddaughter, Laura Gray.
Charlie requested no funeral but to be cremated and later spread to his favorite spots by family. The family wishes to thank all doctors and nurses of Eastern Maine Medical Center for providing outstanding care for him.
