Maurice P. Knowles

MAXFIELD AND BOWERBANK - Maurice "Butch" Knowles, 71, loving husband and father passed away April 16, 2013, at his home with his family by his side, after a long battle with heart disease. He was born June 1, 1941, in Milo, the son of Maurice M. and Lillian M. (Hobbs) Knowles.

Butch was a 1960 graduate of Milo High School and a 1964 graduate of Ricker College, Houlton. He operated a Pontiac dealership and opened the town's first car wash. In 1973 he accepted the position as manager of Milo Farmers Union and completed 18 years of service as well as serving on the Milo Farmers Union board of directors. In 1986 he saw an opportunity to build another car wash in Lincoln, beginning construction in 1986 and opening in 1987. He managed both businesses until he retired from Milo Farmers Union in 1991. Butch was treasurer of 15 G's Investment Club and also served as selectman and a member of the planning board for the town of Maxfield. Butch's favorite place to spend time was at his lakeside cottage on Sebec Lake, he especially enjoyed doing this with his family. He enjoyed flying his Citabria aircraft, fishing and boating with the kids. Butch was either sitting dockside with Lucy or working on his cottage. For 43 years he called it "a work in progress" and loved to be by the lake.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 48 years, Beatrice; two sons, Mark Knowles and wife, Deborah, of Steep Falls and Ryan Knowles of Portland; daughter, Kelly Harris and husband, Michael, of Milo; and several nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be conducted in the family lot at Evergreen Cemetery, Milo.
