Gertrude G. Johnston

MILO - Gertrude G. Johnston, 89, wife of Lloyd G. Johnston, died Dec. 19, 2012, at Maine Veterans Home, Bangor. She was born Nov. 17, 1923, in Bangor, the daughter of Daniel and Florence (Hoskins) Gilbert.

The family moved to Milo in 1924. Gertrude graduated from Milo High School, class of 1941. She began nurse's training at Trell Hospital, Biddeford, and then joined the U.S. Navy Waves, March 9, 1944. She did her basic training at Hunter College, Bronx, N.Y., and continued medical training in USNT, Bethesda, Md. She worked in four different hospitals before being discharged from U.S. Navy Hospital, Sampson, N.Y., Aug. 22, 1946. Gertrude was a member of Joseph P. Chaisson American Legion Post No. 41, Milo, and also a lifetime member of Waves National - Women of the Sea Services.

She is survived by her husband, Lloyd of Milo; a brother, Robert D. Gilbert of Arizona; two sisters, Barbara Bloodworth of LaGrange and Teresa M. Thompson of Florida; and two sons, Scott Johnston and his wife, Tina, of Milo, and their children, Ben Johnston and his wife, Jennifer, of Georgia and Molly Johnston of Vermont, and Steve Johnston and his wife, Connie, of Waterville, and their children, Carrie Maxwell and her husband, Scott, of Winslow, and their daughters, Paige and Morrigan, and Stephanie Hurd and her husband, Ryan, of Milo, and their children, Kaybren "KB" and Khloe. She was predeceased by a brother, Roscoe C. Gilbert.

A graveside memorial service with military honors will be conducted in the family lot at Evergreen Cemetery in the spring.
