SEBEC - Richard A. Hughes, 66, died unexpectedly Monday evening, Nov. 14, 2011, surrounded by family members at Mayo Regional Hospital. He was born Aug. 9, 1945, in Milo, a son of John and Velzora (Stevens) Hughes. Richard was well known throughout the area as an avid horseman, who broke and trained horses for both work and pleasure. He pulled ponies at local fairs and worked them in the woods, clearing and plowing his own land with them as well. He was one of the founding members of Dirigo Horseman's Association of Dover-Foxcroft and a longtime member of Piscataquis Valley Fair Association. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Carol Hughes of Sebec; sons, Gene Terrill of Bangor, and Danny Hughes and wife, Stacey, of Clifton; daughter, Theresa and husband, David Poissonnier, of Sebec; stepchildren, Valerie Quimby of Fairfield, Vickie Gray of Brownville, Debbie Warren of Sebec and David Seavey of Dover-Foxcroft; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Bessy Gray of Florida, and Shirley Lowe and spouse, Bill, of Massachusetts; sister-in-law, Jeannette Hughes of Sebec; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Johnny, Maurice and Henry Hughes; and a sister, Bunny Cates. He will be remembered by newly discovered family members of the late Al Whitehead. In lieu of flowers, donations to the family to help defray funeral costs would be greatly appreciated. A celebration of life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at Piscataquis Valley Fairgrounds Dining Hall.
