Joan Butler Foss

DOVER-FOXCROFT AND ATKINSON - Joan Butler Foss went to be with the Lord quietly and peacefully May 12, 2011, with a smile on her face, her children at her side. She opened her eyes and saw heaven; God held her in his arms and carried her to an eternal life where there is no pain and no sorrow. For the last several days she had been a patient at Penobscot Valley Hospital under the care of a thoughtful and dedicated staff with her family constantly at her side. She came there from Cummings Health Care Facility, where she had been a resident since November. She enjoyed teasing the staff, playing bingo and just being "mum" with her sweet smile and good nature even in times of physical distress. Although not able to communicate through words ... she always got her point across! The staff cared for her lovingly under the watchful eyes of Mrs. Bailey and Donna. Tracey, her youngest daughter, took care of her prior to her stay at Cummings for several years in her home and we are all grateful for her dedication to Mum's care. Our mother was born Nov. 23, 1932, in Dover-Foxcroft, to Allie and Margaret Butler. She had four siblings, George, Irene, James and Elizabeth, all deceased now. In 1951 she married our dad, Norman Foss and they shared 53 years together and raised five kids on Pine Street, Dover-Foxcroft. Dad passed in January 2005. Mom was a hard worker and worked at jobs she loved. They ranged from picking veggies at Stutzman's Farm to her position with International Paper at Dover Wood Yard, Guilford Industries and Dexter Shoe; all office positions at which she excelled. She loved working at Charleston Correctional Facility, which was where she retired. She always had a smile and took the time to talk to whomever she met; she was a kind, loving and beautiful lady, mother, wife, friend and neighbor. She is survived by her loving kids, Ruth Ann Malcolm and husband, Perry, of Waterville, Norman Jr. of Portland, Margaret Ann Thompson and husband, Ivan, of Milo, James of Grand Junction, Colo.; and Tracey Foss McEwen and husband, Dean, of Atkinson. She had beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who knew what it was to have a real Gram who let them make blanket tents, ride the Burrough Road looking for deer, explore the enchanted forest, make mashed potatoes with A-1 and create rooms in the bamboo. She will be missed by Michael Hughes and his daughter, Jasmyne, Joshua Dobson and his daughter, Olivia, Kiley Foss and her children, Ethan and Madison, Christopher Foss and his son, Stanley, Sarah, Casey and Sheila. Chris and Dan Hughes were always loved and thought of by their Gram as well. A graveside service will be announced at a later date. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Living Word Ecumenical Food Cupboard, 176 East Main St., Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426. Arrangements are in the care of Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft.
