BANGOR - Leona J. Clukey passed away March 30, 2010, in Bangor. She was born Dec. 10, 1914, in LaGrange, the middle child of Clifford H. and Bertha A. (Soper) West. Leona graduated from Bangor High School, attended the University of Maine and graduated from Beal Business School. On Jan. 18, 1941, she married Robert E. Clukey Sr., also of Bangor. Active in many groups, such as the Patawa Club and Saturday Nighters, she may be best remembered as a nursery school teacher. She ran "Mrs. Clukey's Nursery School" for 27 rewarding years. She found one of the pleasures of turning 95 last December to be the numerous cards and letters that her former students sent with their best wishes. Leona volunteered to help many groups in the area and was especially interested in the YWCA. She also worked for a few years as the summer volunteer coordinator for Eastern Maine General Hospital. She was a dedicated and loving wife and mother, and was especially devoted to her three grandchildren. Leona was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Robert E. Clukey Sr.; her older sister, Eleanor D. Yerxa; and her beloved grandson, Lt. Cmdr. Robert E. "Trey" Clukey III, U.S. Navy. She is survived by her brother, Col. Clifford H. West Jr.; her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Robert E. Clukey Jr. and Dr. Frances Harlow Clukey; a granddaughter and her husband, Robin E. Clukey and Aaron J. Brasslett, and their daughters, Katherine and Josephine, all of Bangor; a granddaughter, Christanna Harlow Libby and her husband, Christopher D. Libby, of Orono; a nephew and six nieces. The family thanks the staff of the Maine Veterans Home, Bangor, for their wonderful care and support, and more recently the excellent staff of Acadia Assisted Living Center and New Hope Hospice. A memorial service for Leona will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Canon Mary Ann Taylor, pastoral associate of St. John's Episcopal Church, Bangor, officiating. There will be a family graveside service later in the spring at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer. Those friends wishing to remember Leona in a special way are invited to consider a contribution to the Trey Clukey Scholarship Fund, Orono High School, care of the Superintendent of Orono Schools, 983 Hudson Road, Glenburn, ME 04401 or Bangor YWCA, 17 Second St., Bangor, ME 04401. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
