Merle Austin Lyford Jr

BRADFORD - Merle Austin Lyford Jr., 80, husband of Constance (Ryan) Lyford, went to be with our Lord and Savior Nov. 24, 2009, at his residence. He was born July 31, 1929, in Milo, the son of Merle and Jennie (Bradshaw) Lyford Sr. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served his country from 1948 to 1952. He worked for Bangor & Aroostook Railroad and retired from Dexter Shoe Co. after 30 years. Merle enjoyed University of Maine Women's Basketball, bowling, tending his flower gardens, and planting trees and shrubs. He was a true family man, a wonderful husband and father. A member of Bradford Baptist Church, he also enjoyed his church family, and will be missed by many friends. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 31 years, Connie of Bradford; his children, Lisa and Greg Holmes, and their children, Heather and Matt, all of Glenburn, Mike and Linda Lyford and their children, Sean and Cortney, all of Freedom, Tony and Barb Lyford, and their children, Merilee, Jeremy and Ryan, all of Kenduskeag, Darrell and Donna Lyford of Brewer, and their children, D.J. Lyford of Massachusetts, Danny Lyford of Connecticut, Chip Babineau of Portland and Aimee Babineau of Lewiston, Deb and Mike Gray, and their daughter, Erica, all of Dedham; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his brothers and sisters, Bea Knowles and husband, Reginald, of Newport, Ron Lyford and wife, Lottie, of St. Albans, Dave Lyford and wife, Arletta, of Pittsfield, Joyce Carlson of Massachusetts, Roberta Thurlen and husband, Don, of Virginia, Peg Valvo and husband, Bob, of Connecticut, Stanley Lyford and wife, Nadine, of LaGrange, John Lyford and wife, Lynn, of Addison and Wayne Lyford and wife, Cindy, of South China. Merle's family extends their gratitude to Hospice of Eastern Maine for their care for Merle during the past few months. Friends are invited to call 10 a.m. until the time of funeral service 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at Bradford Baptist Church with Pastor Donald Booker and Dalton Dunphey officiating.
