GREENVILLE - Violet L. Richards, 98, wife of the late James D. Richards, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, surrounded by many of her family members at a Greenville nursing facility. She was born May 11, 1911, in Milo, daughter of Vernie and Mary Ellen (Erskine) Mayo. Vi was an adventurous, active and involved woman. The oldest of 12 children, she left home after graduating from Milo High School to work at West Branch Camps in the Kokadjo area, where she met her future husband. "Grammie Vi," as she was known to all, raised her family in Kokadjo and Greenville and she deeply touched the lives of many. She is survived by a son and his wife, James and Ruth Richards; a daughter, Nancy Elsemore; daughter-in-law, Virginia Richards, all of Greenville; 11 grandchildren, James Richards III, Lori Richards, Judith Campbell, Susan Wong, Janice Lavigne, Richard "Rocky" Elsemore, Janet Chasse, Joni Slattery, Joseph Richards, Jeffrey Richards and Jonathan Richards; three brothers, Jack Mayo of Virginia, Murray Mayo and Richard Mayo, both of Milo; four sisters, Elsie Mayo of Milo, Beatrice Phillips of Brewer, Edith Mayo of Virginia and Jean Lee of Milo; and all of her many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, all of whom have happy memories of travels, picnics, camping trips and just spending time with her. She was predeceased by a son, Jerome Richards; a son-in-law, Robert Elsemore; and three grandsons, Dana Elsemore, Jerry Richards and Rob Elsemore. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Greenville chapel of Crosby & Neal, at the Masonic building, Pritham Avenue. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at Peoples' United Methodist Church, Greenville Junction, with Pastor Harbour Mitchell III officiating. Burial will be at Greenville Cemetery.
