Raymond W. Farnham Sr

BATH - Raymond W. Farnham Sr., 95, of High Street, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at Dirigo Pines Re-tirement Community, Orono. He was born Jan. 7, 1911, in Brownville Junction, the fourth son of Willard and Marion (Morrison) Farnham. He graduated from Brownville Junction High School in 1928, from Higgins Classical Institution in 1931 and Colby College in 1936, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and president of the freshman class. He was a star athlete in high school, prep school and at Colby College, where he lettered for four years in baseball and played on the state championship team. He earned a master's degree in education at the University of Maine in 1951. In his earlier years he was employed by the Canadian Pacific Railroad and the Great Northern Paper Co. He began his career in education as a teacher and coach at Milo High School and then Madison High School. He was the principal of Madison High School from 1942 to 1944 and from 1946 to 1949. From 1944 to 1946, he served during World War II in the U.S. Army as an interviewer and counselor at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts. He returned to Madison High School as principal in 1946 and then was the principal of Morse High School, Bath, from 1949 to 1967. In 1967 he was appointed as the first full time executive secretary of the State Principals Association until 1974. During his years in education, he was active in local, county and state teachers' organizations. He was a charter member of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame, a member of its executive committee and was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1978. He was also a member of the Legends, a sports recognition organization. He served as president of the Bath Rotary Club; member of the St. Andrews Society of Maine; a member of the Bath Country Club; the United Church of Christ Congregational, Bath; a 50-year member of the Euclid Lodge AF & AM, Madison; and a member of the Colby "C" Club. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Ruth Todd Farnham, Oct. 6, 2005; one son, John Allan Farnham in 1942; as well as his three brothers, Roderick, Albion and Carlton. He is survived by his son, Raymond W. Farnham Jr. and wife, Elizabeth, of Wells; two daughters, Dian Jordan of Bangor and Judy Carter and husband, Tom, of Dixmont. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Teri Carr, Tracy Landeryou, John Jordan, Craig Farnham and Jennifer Farnham; as well as three great-grandchildren, Matthew Farnham, Ryan Carr and Jordan Carr and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Monday at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High St., Bath. A funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at United Church of Christ Congregational, Bath. Burial will be at Pine Tree Cemetery, Brownville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Raymond and Ruth Farnham Scholarship Fund, care of Morse High School, 826 High St., Bath, ME 04530 or the Raymond and Ruth Farnham Scholarship Fund, Colby College, 4600 Mayflower Hill, Waterville, ME 04901.
