Marguerite S. Gerrish

WINTER HARBOR - Marguerite S. Gerrish, 96, of Main Street, died May 30, 2006. She was born Oct. 31, 1909, in Garland, the daughter of Leslie C. and Hazel (Bunker) Smith. She lived in Charleston most of her life, where she attended schools and graduated from the teacher-training course at Higgins Classical Institute. She furthered her education at Farmington Normal School, Presque Isle Normal School, and the University of Maine at Orono. She was an elementary school teacher for 44 years, having taught in the towns of Atkinson, Bradford, Charleston and Hudson. She was a member of the National Education Association, the Maine Retired Teachers Association, a Hospice volunteer of Hancock County, and a life member of Silver Leaf Chapter No. 154, Order of the Eastern Star of Charleston, having served as worthy matron in 1944. She was a Christian and had belonged to Baptist churches since 1927. She was predeceased by her first husband, Alvin R. Goodwin of Charleston in 1972, after 37 years of happiness together. Also predeceasing her were two brothers, Arthur C. Smith of Bradford and Arnold L. Smith of Charleston. She was also predeceased by her beloved husband, the Rev. Herman D. Gerrish of Winter Harbor, whom she married in 1974. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Ruth Smith of Bradford and Pauline Smith of Skowhegan; a niece, Elaine Smith Niles and husband, Carl, of Skowhegan; four nephews, Robert Smith and wife, Janet, of Lagrange, Leslie Smith and wife, Jean, of Bradford, the Rev. Douglas Smith and wife, Priscilla, of Corinth, Scott Smith and wife, Cindy, of Corinth; several great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and a host of friends. She is remembered by special friend, Dale Pineo and grateful thanks go to special friend and caregiver, Larry D. Smith Sr. Visiting hours will be noon-2 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at the Bradford Baptist Church and the celebration of her home going will be directly afterward. Burial will be in Puddledock Cemetery, Charleston. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in her memory to Hospital Chaplaincy Service Inc., 2912 Western Ave., Hampden, ME 04444. Arrangements are by the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
