Herbert Eugene Sargent

STILLWATER - Herbert Eugene Sargent, 100, died peacefully April 9, 2006, at home. He was born Feb. 22, 1906, in Alton, the only son of Grace (Stormann) Sargent and James Butman Sargent. He attended schools in Alton and Old Town and graduated from Milo High School as president of the Class of 1925. In 1926, he entered the Engineering College at the University of Maine in Orono. After attending college he bought a gravel truck with his uncle and father and began his successful venture into the construction business. He founded H.E. Sargent, Inc. and Central Equipment Company. He was a partner in Central Maine Flying Service. He and his companies constructed many highways and airports throughout northern New England. He always attributed his success to his many loyal employees. He was a devoted family man who loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He lived his life with honor and humility, caring very much about others, especially young people. He was the first president of the Old Town City Council and served as chairman of the Old Town School Board. He was a member of the Federated Church of Stillwater, a member of the Old Town-Orono YMCA board and a charter member of the Old Town-Orono YMCA Heritage Club. He was on the board of directors at the Merchants National Bank, a founding member of the Maine Community Foundation Board of Directors, a member of St. Joseph's Hospital Board, and on the Presidents Council of the Eastern Maine Medical Center. He was a member of the American Road Builders Association and the Associated General Contractors of Maine. He was an active member and past president of the Orono Old Town Kiwanis Club, an honorary chair of the United Way Campaign, and on the board of directors and the executive committee of United Way. He was a Mason and Shriner and also a Registered Maine Guide. He received many honors throughout his life. Included among them are the Norbert Dowd Chamber of Commerce Award, the Outstanding Citizen Award from the Knights of Columbus in Old Town, the Annual Exemplary Citizen Award from the Bangor Brewer Area Management Club, and the Community Citizen Award from the Old Town Grange No. 522. He received an honorary degree of doctor of business administration from Husson College. Recently, he was honored as a distinguished member of the "Francis Crowe Society" at the University of Maine in the College of Engineering. He received the distinguished service to Youth Award from the State of Maine YMCA. Survivors include his five children, Anita and husband, Ralph Leonard, Virginia S. Gowen, James G. Sargent, Calista and husband, Earle Hannigan, Marvia and husband, Michael Meagher; grandchildren, Lynda Leonard, Kerri and husband, Tom Ellison and their four children Kaitlin, Patrick, Meaghan, and Meredith; Kent Leonard and wife, Lisa and their five children, Joseph, Jacob, Jaron, Jackson, and Julianne; Lauri and husband, Fred Reichel and their three children, Kent, Kristina, and Melissa; Debra Gowen; Kathleen Neal and husband, Guy and their son, Benjamin; Julie Fehrnstom and husband, Chris and their three children, James, Caroline, and William; Karen Littlefield and husband, Bob and children, Amanda Knight and Shelli Gushue; Susan Gallant and her husband, Greg; Dixie Redmond and her husband, Richard and children, Alexander and Joshua; Herbert R. Sargent and wife, Lori and children, Savannah and James; Katrina DeArmott and children, Patrick and Nickolas; Shane Sargent and wife, Lee and their children, Samuel, Benjamin and William; Sven Wiberg and wife, Linda and their four children, Molly, Bridget, Beth, and John; Erik Wiberg and wife, Judy and their daughter, Calista-Jean; Sonja Parker and husband, Niles and their children, Noah, Nicholas, and Eliza; Nils Wiberg and wife, Sarah; Andrew Meagher and Amber Kimberly Meagher. He is also survived by four great-great-grandchildren; survivors also include niece, Geraldine McManus; and nephew, William Wirt Brown III and wife, Sue. He was predeceased by his first wife, Amber (Warren) Sargent, the mother of his five children; his second wife, Vera (Connor) Sargent; his sister, Margaret (Sargent) Brown; and his grandson, Ralph "Rick" Leonard Jr. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, at the Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A celebration of Mr. Sargent's life will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at the Stillwater Federated Church, Bennoch Road, Stillwater, with Pastor Ron Chaffee, officiating. Interment services will follow at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town. Immediately following the service at the cemetery, all are invited to the Black Bear Inn and Convention Center, Godfrey Drive, for a light luncheon and continued fellowship.
