Oscar A. Mayo

BENTON - Oscar A. Mayo, 95, died peacefully Thursday, March 16, 2006, at home surrounded by his family. He was born June 11, 1910, in Milo, the son of Oscar Mayo and Mary (Severance) Mayo Adams. Oscar shared 78 devoted years of marriage with his wife, Evelyn (Buzzell) Mayo, whom he married Oct. 26, 1927. They spent their many years together living in Wilton, Surry, Wells and Benton and with family and friends in Eustis, hunting and fishing at the camp they built - Shangri La. Oscar was also a member of Odd Fellows in Wilton for more than 60 years. He spent most of his working life in the Wilton woolen mill and for the radio personality Phillips H. Lord in Surry. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn; son, Averill "Ted" Mayo and wife, Mary Ann, of Washburn; daughter, Janet Mayo Sylvester and husband, Harrison, of Winslow; grandchildren, Linda Mayo Thompson and husband, Bill, Amber Mayo Meadows, Brett Mayo and fiance, Diane, Tammy Mayo Lavoie and husband, Mike, all of New Hampshire, Richard Sylvester and wife, Carol, of Kennebunk, and Deborah Bradstreet of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters, Emma Blaisdell of Norridgewock, and Evelyn McElarth of Skowhegan; nine great-grandchildren, Shawn, Nicole, Jason, Ryan, Darren, Erica, Erin, Noah and Azure; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Oscar was predeceased by four sisters, five brothers and a grandson, Michael Sylvester. A celebration of Oscar's life will be held for friends and family 1-4 p.m. Saturday, March 25 at the Mayo's home in Benton. Internment services will be held in the spring in Abbot. In lieu of flowers, donations in Oscar's memory may be made to Health Reach Hospice, 212 Main St., Waterville, ME 04901.
