Robert F. Joyce

DOYLESTOWN, PA AND DOVER-FOXCROFT - Robert F. Joyce, 77, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, at his home in Doylestown, Pa., with his beloved wife of 49 years at his side, after a second bout with lung cancer. He was born Feb. 28, 1928, in Paterson, N.J. His wife, Angela B. Joyce, was head nurse in Maternity at Mayo Hospital for many years and all seven of their children graduated from Foxcroft Academy. He was also known as "Big Bad Bob" to many of his children's friends, to whom he was friend and honored father figure. While in Dover-Foxcroft, he directed the CETA program, which oversaw the renovation of the East Dover Tannery in order to encourage and help incubate small business start-ups, and worked as a consultant to Guilford Woolen Mill. He was a member of the Retired Officer's Association and St. Thomas Catholic Church. He left St. Bonaventure's Monastery High School to join the Merchant Marine in 1944 and sailed around the world during World War II. He completed school at war's end and attended Montclair State Teacher's College as mathematics major. As the Korean War progressed, he left college and graduated from pilot training as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force. He had a distinguished 20 year career as an Air Force Command Pilot who flew combat missions in both the Korean and Viet Nam Wars and was stationed at Cape Cod, Mass., Savannah, Ga., Travis City, MI, San Antonio, Texas, Montgomery, Ala., Riverside, Calif., Wiesbaden, Germany, and Minot, N.D., before his retirement and the family's move to Dover-Foxcroft. Although a resident of 13 Winter St., from 1973 to 1986, he and his family still continued to vacation and gather for family reunions at Sebec Lake. He was predeceased by his dear friend and neighbor, Art Hathaway, and will be fondly remembered by the Donna L. Hathaway family. He is survived by his wife, Angela, and their devoted children, Mark Joyce of Ukiah, Calif., David Joyce of Marblehead, Mass., Daniel Joyce of Fairfax, Va., Jennifer Joyce Stuckey of Ottsville, Pa., Erin Joyce of New York City, Lt. Col. Christopher Joyce, USAF of Pensacola, Fla., and Patrick Joyce of Veazie. He was a loving grandfather and tireless playmate to 14 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Joyce of Parish, Fla. in August. He is also survived by his brother, Jack Joyce of Cedar Grove, N.J.; sisters, Mary McGarry of San Jose, Calif., and Barbara Ballantyne of Hamburg, N.J. His Funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 3, at Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Doylestown, Pa., and he will be interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
